Cayman Weather & Climate

Year-Round Sunshine

It can take a little time to adjust to Cayman's hot sub-tropical climate - but it's perfect for those who seek sunshine and warmth!

The most popular time for vacation visitors is the high season of December to April. During this time the climate is a little milder, with cooling breezes - more like a European summers' day.

The rest of the year tends to be hotter, more humid and with occasional showers. But the climate is still good, the beaches still golden and the bars are still open!

Temperature fluctuations are surprisingly small throughout the year with temperatures remaining in the 25C-30C (77F-86F) range

Hurricane Season

Hurricane season starts on June 1and runs until November.

Those living on Cayman are all to aware of the danger of hurricanes. On September 11 & 12,  2004, Hurricane Ivan tore through Grand Cayman, leaving destruction on a huge scale.

The island was quickly rebuilt, and as of 2010 there are only a few scattered reminders of the devastation wreaked on this peaceful island.

Such an even is extremely rare - but Cayman employers, and the government, take the potential of hurricanes and tropical storms seriously.

Many companies have contingency measures for such eventualities with some of the larger companies operating their own evacuation flights.

The government has put in place, as is now common across the Caribbean, a hurricane warning system. But on a small island like Grand Cayman it doesn't take long for word to get around.

There are a number of excellent websites available to track tropical storms and hurricanes, the the main being the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami. Visit the NHC.

Most hurricanes take time to grow and generate their power and this means that, usually, residents have a few days' notice of any potential issues.

The biggest danger from hurricanes is flooding. With Grand Cayman  being low-lying, coastal flooding has the potential to be severe and levels of potential storm surge are monitored closely.
