Cayman Banking

The Cayman Islands is world renowned for its high-quality private banking and investment as part of a dynamic financial services industry.

There are a large number of both private an retail banks on Grand Cayman.

Retail Banking

Opening a bank account when you move to Cayman is often not as easy for an expat as it might be back home. Strict money-laundering procedures sometimes make it difficult to carry out even the most mundane tasks.

Be prepared to provide in-depth information and a reference from your employer often helps. Banking with the same retail bank as your employer often helps to speed up the process.

Most expats choose to bank with Cayman National Bank or Butterfield Bank but there are a number of alternatives on Grand Cayman including Scotia Bank, Fidelity Bank, First Caribbean and  Bank of Canada.

Butterfield Bank

Butterfield is headquartered in Bermuda and is the largest privately-operated retail bank on the islands.

Their main banking operations are at a new building in the heart of George Town (Butterfield House, 68 Fort Street),  at Governors Square on Seven Mile Beach (Governors Square, 23 Lime Tree Bay Avenue) and the Compass Center (19 North Sound Road) .

They offer credit cards, insurance and internet banking amongst their services.

Cayman National Bank

Government-owned CNB is the most prominent banking operation in the Cayman Islands.

With a major headquarters in a purpose-build building at 200 Elgin Avenue us George Town, it has four additional branches on Grand Cayman in West Bay, Seven Mile Beach, George Town and Savannah.

CNB is the only bank with banking operations on the Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

They offer a full range of retail banking services as well as mortgages, boat insurance and investment.

Private Banking & Wealth Management

Here are a few of the private banking operations operating in Grand Cayman.

RBC Wealth Management

RBC has provided offshore banking and wealth management services to Cayman residents and international clients in Cayman since 1972.

HSBC

HSBC opened a major purpose-built branch in 2008 at 68 West Bay Road.

However, in 2009 HSBC closed its Private Wealth Solutions department in Cayman, amidst a restructuring that saw the consolidation of HSBC Caymans private wealth business with that in Bermuda.

HSBC is also keen to develop its retail banking operations on Grand Cayman.
