About The Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas territory in the heart of the Caribbean and part of the British West Indies.
Located 200 miles south of Cuba and a hundred or so miles west of Jamaica, the islands are just an hour from Miami by plane.
Caymans bustling economy is built on the twin pillars of tourism and the financial services industry a business that has put the Caymans on the map throughout the world.
The Cayman Islands are made up of three distinct islands, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
Most of the action, and certainly the employment, is based in Grand Cayman with the sister islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman supporting a combined population of less than 3,000.
Grand Cayman, with a population of 55,000, is home to many of the offshore worlds biggest names in the financial services industry from legal giants Maples & Calder and Walkers to the Big Four accounting firms of PWC, Ernst & Young, Deloitte and KPMG.
Grand Cayman is also the global home of the hedge fund with the vast majority of the worlds funds based on the island.
Working in Grand Cayman provides a host of benefits from zero direct taxation to life in a sunny Caribbean climate.
Sipping mojitos on glorious Seven Mile Beach ranks alongside deep sea fishing and world-class scuba diving as top attractions for the expat worker.
There are jobs in every sector of industry, although strict work permit laws give local Caymanian workers preference for all jobs.
Many expats arrive to fill vacancies in the legal sector where hedge fund, corporate and insolvency lawyers are particularly in demand.
The global economic slowdown of 2008 and 2009 has taken its toll on Caymans employment market, but much of the worst now seems to have passed with new opportunities arising as firms look to the future for recovery.
Even outside the professional services industry there are positions in every sector of an economy where expats outnumber Caymanians by more than 2:1.
The islands are truly multi-cultural, with large communities of British, American, Canadian, South African, Jamaican, Indian and Pilipino worker in evidence.
If youre considering a life offshore, then Grand Cayman should be top of your list.
